Lazos: Bridging Cultures and Communities

Lazos is a program dedicated to bridging cultural gaps for Spanish-speaking communities through the power of performance. By celebrating the richness of Latin American identity in New York City, Lazos creates vital connections across cultures and borders, turning the theatre into a home for every voice.

A Flexible, Community-Centered Model

We understand that every neighborhood and organization has its own rhythm. Lazos is designed to be modular: it can be structured as a 4-week intensive, a 10-week residency, or a year-long community ensemble, depending on the needs and goals of your group.

What We Explore Together

Our curriculum is a "choose-your-own-path" model, focusing on the specific curiosities and challenges of the participants:

  • Practical Language Immersion: We use theatre as a low-stress, high-fun environment for English language practice. Participants gain confidence by "acting out" real-world scenarios in a supportive bilingual space.

  • Cultural Navigation & Role-Play: Through role-play, we rehearse the complexities of life in a new country. We explore "The American Experience" by practicing social interactions, advocacy, and navigating new systems with grounded presence.

  • Conflict Resolution (Forum Theatre): Using Theatre of the Oppressed techniques, the group identifies real-life challenges or "oppressions." We stage these moments and collectively rehearse solutions, empowering members to tackle conflicts in their daily lives.

  • Literacy & Playwriting: The group can choose to stage existing masterpieces by celebrated Latin American playwrights or write their own original scenes that reflect their lived experiences in New York.

  • The Spanish-Language Stage: We celebrate the beauty of our native tongue by staging works entirely in Spanish, ensuring that cultural heritage is preserved and honored as a professional artistic standard.

The Impact

Whether we are tackling a specific social issue or exploring the history of Latin American theatre, the goal of Lazos is to provide a "soft landing" for our community. Participants leave with improved communication skills, a deeper understanding of their surroundings, and a sense of pride in their dual identity.

Outcomes

  • Socio-Cultural Competency: Gaining the tools to navigate a new culture without losing one's original identity.

  • Linguistic Confidence: Reducing the "affective filter" (anxiety) that often blocks language learning through physical play.

  • Civic Agency: Recognizing that personal struggles are shared community struggles that can be solved through collective action.
